Satin Puppets
Pale and haunting like the mists clinging to the pines of their native Crestline, California, alternative goth duo Satin Puppets create haunting cinematic orchestral pop. Identical twins Joanna and Julia Araujo had already accumulated a massive social media following for their surreal visual art, makeup tutorials, dark Victorian style, and tattoo work when by chance the twins met songwriter and producer Chris Qualls aka Nxghtshade. The two had grown up singing and performing but it wasn’t until autumn of 2020 that they visited a recording studio
Nxghtshade loved the Araujo’s voices and blood harmonies as well as the immersive magical worlds they created with their art. Qualls and the sisters got together in Los Angeles and created Satin Puppet’s debut single “Quagmire”. When discussing a signature sound the three decided to draw inspiration from soundtracks, choosing orchestral elements over traditional rock instruments. The plan was to create a song that served as an extension of the Arajujo’s eerie paintings and Qualls’ background in alt-pop and experience in film scoring. In the melodies, the twins were able to incorporate their Russian heritage as all the songs they sang along with their Grandmother as children came rushing back.
The song and video premiered on Jan 22, 2021 on Alternative Press. It quickly gathered attention from both fans and the music industry and passed 300,000 streams in the first six months.
The sisters quickly followed up the stunning “Quagmire” with the singles “Intertwined” and “Circus Tent”. The duo began receiving offers from record labels, eventually signing with Mike Kaminsky and Matt Clarke’s Adventure Cat Records. After signing, they headed back into the studio with Nxghtshade to start work on “Puppeteer” a 10 chapter concept album that envelops the listener and takes them on a healing journey in the twin’s dark, twisted imaginary world.
The twins have received radio support from KCRW in LA and recently performed 4 songs at legendary LA music industry event School Night. In their short existence Satin Puppets has picked up more than 1.7 million followers on Tiktok, 100k followers on Instagram and 12k subscribers on YouTube. The duo have been releasing a string of spooky, moody covers on YouTube to satisfy their ravenous fan base while working on the “Puppeteer” album.“
